Monday morning James woke up throwing up. We still aren't sure if it was a stomach bug or the pizza he had the night before. We kind of think it was the pizza. Fortunately, Ian wouldn't eat it (he really does have a sixth sense about that kind of stuff!) and I was at work. So James stayed in bed all day and Ian went to daycare as planned while I went to student teaching and class.
In class, right before I was about to present, I noticed daycare had called. That is never good! I had to present and was starting to get a little worried about what to do when James texted to say he was on the way to get Ian. Poor James! He still wasn't feeling good. Fortunately, Ian was probably just overtired and not actually sick.
I got home from class to find James wiped on the couch, Ian playing, and ants swarming our kitchen sink. Sigh. So instead of taking care of either Ian or James, I spent the next 45 minutes honing my exterminator skills. I have to say I'm glad I'm not in that business full time!
A clean sick and about a hundred dead ants later, I got Ian and James into bed.
Tuesday Ian and I went to a new park for his Valentine's present. James went to work for just that afternoon. When he got home, he read Ian a story. The next thing I know, James was telling me he couldn't breathe. Honestly, I wasn't overly worried. Allergies, sick...it all plays in. A bit later though, he was telling me his face and hands were going numb. And he was having a really hard time breathing.
That's when I started to panic. We hadn't planned much for Valentine's since James had been sick and our schedules are so crazy. I was actually about to crash in bed. I was exhausted and couldn't really think straight. So I made James get dressed (he didn't want to go to the doctor), helped him to the car, threw Ian in the car, and rushed us out the door. I called our local urgent care center along the way and they said they would just take James to an ER. Fortunately, there is a nice new one that just opened up one exit down the highway from us and is actually closer than the urgent care center. So we just went straight there instead.
All I had to tell the admitting clerk was that James couldn't breathe and his face and hands were numb. They immediately wheeled James back to a room while the very nice janitor played a magnet game with Ian as I was filling out paper work. When we got back to the room with James, he was doing MUCH better. The doctor came in and saw him and confirmed that his electrolyte and potassium levels had been low due to the vomiting and that can cause the type of reaction he had. We had no idea. I'm just thankful it wasn't a heart attack! Well worth the ER bill for the peace of mind. :-)
Ian wanted to read to Daddy while he rested. Happy Valentine's Day to us! It was certainly a memorable day!
Yesterday, Ian was playing with the little Dr. Suess decorations from his birthday last year. Remember these?

As I turned back, I both heard and saw the crunch at the same time as he put the gumball machine in his mouth!! The ball was made with glass and it broke in half and the beads spilled out in his mouth! Most of the time, I get rather annoyed by Ian's gag reflex (he hates new textures and gags profusely), but I was so so thankful for it yesterday! He gagged and spit until he got most all of the beads out. Fortunately, his gag reaction was so instantaneous that he didn't even get cut by the glass and I was able to wipe/swipe everything out of his mouth! Needless to say, he won't be playing with toys that small anytime soon, no matter how well I think he is doing with them.
So...if you would like a surge of adrenaline, please come for a visit! We have plenty to share!
I bet it's the last time you go to "Poison Petes" for a pizza too.
