Today was a lot of just lounging around and catching up on sleep. Ian even slept until 9:15 this morning!! Soooo nice for Mommy and Daddy. Ian was so tired that he was ready for a nap again around 11am. He slept a whole hour and forty minutes in his crib! (He's not always the best napper and often ends up in our bed.) Around 3pm, he was ready for a nap again, but we decided to feed him snack first. Poor baby was pretty tired and only ate a few of his grape slices and a tiny corner of his graham cracker. I could empathize - we partied hard!
So I decided to give him a few M&Ms...we all needed a little extra boost today! Except I couldn't find the M&Ms right away, so I grabbed a leftover bag of Reeses pieces and gave him a couple. He ate just a few (we never give him many anyways) and we were off for nap time. He was sooooooo tired, but wasn't falling asleep right away, so Daddy went in to rock him. James has always been the best baby soother for naps and bedtime! Anyways, after about five minutes, I heard Ian start to cry and James called for me. My best guess was that Ian had a dirty diaper and wasn't holding still to be changed, but something in James' voice made me run across the living room to Ian's room. Poor baby had just thrown up all over Daddy!
Of course, James, being the wonderful, amazing Daddy he is, was not at all freaked out by it and just needed help getting Ian in the tub and a minute to run and change his own clothes. Then he was back to finish Ian's bath and get him dressed. There is seriously nothing more sexy or amazing than having your hubby care for your sick child - be still my beating heart!
As we were bathing Ian, he started breaking out in a rash. Immediately we were pretty sure he was having an allergic reaction to the Reeses pieces. As a good friend from work says, ruh-roh!! I felt horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do not consider the "peanut butter" in Reeses to be anything close to real peanut butter and had not even thought about it being a possible allergen. That's actually why I am posting this - I have several friends with young children and, while we all hear the no peanuts/nuts rule until 2 or older, it can be so easy to overlook possible offenders (like Reeses pieces!). Ian has even had bits of peanut butter before and not reacted - again another reason that those Reeses didn't hit any warning bells in my head before I gave them to him. If nothing else, perhaps my mistake can be a reminder that saves others from having to go through this.
We went ahead and took pictures of his rash in case we needed them to show the doctor or research online. Poor baby! I feel horrible! (Btw, he's squinting his eye in this picture, it's not that swollen!)
I am so thankful it wasn't a stronger reaction and that we had children's Benadryl in the house already. Fortunately, Ian was pretty much back to his old self after a couple of hours. He was even up for going to the store with me this evening to get Pedialyte and Saltines - his dinner tonight.
Baby, Momma is soooo sorry she didn't think about the peanut butter in Reeses pieces. Thank you for being such a good sport about the whole thing! We love you so much!
hey! i am finally getting caught up on everyone's blogs. I feel SO behind.
ReplyDeletePoor guy! I would have not thought of that either. Glad the reaction was nothing worse than a rash and some throw up. but still.. that's not fun. :(
Glad he's feeling better. :)
Allergic reactions are no fun ... fortunately you guys were there to take care of it and now you know. Put a tally mark next to nuts and revisit it in another year. =)
